AI Storymaker — Kids Write Their First Story With an AI Coach

Explorer · Ages 7–10Kit mission (coming later) · Needs a FoundrKids Kit1–2 hour build + app sessions FoundrKids Kits: coming later

AI Storymaker is a FoundrKids Kit mission where kids ages 7 to 10 write their first real story with an AI coach as their brainstorm partner, not their ghostwriter. It arrives in a FoundrKids Kit with Story Starter Cards and a Character Sticker Sheet, and Spark helps your child shape a story with a beginning, a problem, and an ending they’re proud to have written themselves.

FoundrKids Kits: coming later. This is a Kit mission, built around a physical FoundrKids Kit. Kits aren’t shipping yet; today FoundrKids is an app subscription, and Studio missions are built entirely in the app with Spark.

MAYA’S STORY — “THE INVISIBLE DRAGON”
  • Hero: a shy inventor who talks to machines
  • The problem: her dragon turns invisible when it’s scared
  • The ending she chose (over two Spark offered): she builds it goggles

The project: what your child actually does

A Explorer mission, guided by Spark from first idea to shipped artifact.

  1. 1

    Open the kit

The FoundrKids Kit arrives with Story Starter Cards and a Character Sticker Sheet. First job: lay them out. These are the raw materials: the settings, twists, and characters your child will build a story from.

  2. 2

    Pick a Story Starter Card

Your child chooses a card — a setting, a situation, a problem to build around. One card is all it takes to go from a blank page to “okay, this is where my story starts.”

  3. 3

    Choose a hero

A Character Sticker becomes the hero or helper. Your child decides who this character is and what they’re like — the sticker is a clue, and the personality is theirs to invent.

  4. 4

    Brainstorm with Spark

Here’s the part that makes it click: Spark doesn’t write the story. When your child shares an idea, Spark reflects it back and offers real branches — “what if the dragon’s scales glow, or what if it’s completely invisible?” — two choices, never a finished answer. Your child stays the author.

  5. 5

    Build a real story

Beginning, problem, ending. Spark keeps nudging past the opening: what goes wrong, who helps, how it ends. By the last turn, your child has a whole story — not a prompt, a story — with a shape they can feel.

  6. 6

    Ship it to the portfolio

The finished story is saved to your child’s portfolio, with the card and character that sparked it. Something they wrote, start to finish, with AI in the passenger seat.

What it secretly teaches

A brainstorm partner, not a ghostwriter.

The easiest thing to do with AI and a story is to ask it to write one — and learn nothing. AI Storymaker is built to prevent exactly that. Spark coaches by offering branches and asking questions; your child makes every real choice, from who the hero is to how the problem resolves. They leave having practiced narrative structure — beginning, conflict, resolution — the backbone of every story worth telling.

Underneath the storytelling is the AI-era habit that matters most: directing a tool instead of outsourcing to it. A seven-year-old who learns that AI is a partner to bounce ideas off — one whose suggestions they can take, twist, or reject — carries a very different relationship with AI than one who learns it as a machine that does the work. That framing, formed while having fun, is the real lesson.

What ends up in the portfolio

A finished short story

The complete story your child wrote — hero, problem, and ending — saved to their portfolio alongside the Story Starter Card and character that kicked it off. Proof they can steer an AI brainstorm, not just receive its output.

Questions parents ask about AI Storymaker

What does my child actually make in AI Storymaker?

A complete short story they wrote themselves (with a hero, a problem, and an ending), built from a Story Starter Card and a Character Sticker with Spark as a brainstorm partner. It’s saved to their FoundrKids portfolio.

Does the AI write the story for my child?

No — that’s the whole point. Spark coaches by asking questions and offering two or three creative branches to choose from, but your child makes every decision and does the actual storytelling. They finish as the author, not the audience.

Does AI Storymaker require a box, and what age is it for?

Yes. AI Storymaker is a Kit mission built for the Explorer tier, ages 7 to 10. It’s built around a FoundrKids Kit (kits are coming later) with Story Starter Cards and a Character Sticker Sheet; plan for a 1-2 hour session plus shorter follow-ups with Spark.
