Design Your Own AI Sidekick — Kids Build and Meet Their Own AI Character
Design Your Own AI Sidekick is a FoundrKids Studio mission where kids ages 11 to 15 learn how AI characters work by building one themselves: the personality, the catchphrases, even one honest flaw. No box required: your child authors an AI sidekick, meets their creation in a short scene, and ships it as a character bio page in their portfolio.
- A melodramatic robot who narrates life like a movie trailer
- Catchphrase: “In a world… where homework still exists…”
- Fatal flaw: has never once admitted it was wrong
The project: what your child actually does
A Founder mission, guided by Spark from first idea to shipped artifact.
- 1
Invent the character
Your child decides who their sidekick is: a melodramatic robot, a wise-cracking space cat, a knight who takes everything literally. Spark, the AI coach, asks the questions a character writer would: Who is this? What do they want? Why would anyone keep them around?
- 2
Decide how it talks
Big words or one-liners? Does it hype everything up or deadpan everything down? What would it never, ever say? Every answer is an authoring decision — your child is writing the rules of a personality.
- 3
Write the catchphrases
Every great character has lines they can’t stop saying. Your child writes the signature phrases that make the sidekick unmistakably theirs — the greeting, the victory cry, the thing it mutters when plans fall apart.
- 4
Give it one flaw
Perfect characters are boring — flaws are what make them feel real. Maybe it can never admit it’s wrong. Maybe it’s dramatically afraid of pigeons. Your child chooses the one crack that brings their sidekick to life — the same trick professional character writers use.
- 5
Meet your creation
Then the payoff: a short scene where your child meets the character they designed — and it shows up talking exactly the way they decided it would, catchphrases, flaw and all. The lightbulb lands on its own: every AI character they’ve ever chatted with was authored by someone. This time, the someone was them.
- 6
Ship the bio page
The sidekick’s official bio — name, personality, signature lines, fatal flaw, and a highlight from the first meeting — is saved to your child’s portfolio. Something real they authored, ready to show off.
What it secretly teaches
Every AI character has an author. This time, it’s your child.
On the surface, this is a funny character-design project. Underneath, it teaches the skill the AI era actually runs on: authoring AI behavior instead of consuming it. Your child doesn’t just chat with an AI character — they decide how one talks, what it cares about, and where it breaks, then watch those decisions come back to them in conversation.
That flips a switch that doesn’t flip back. A kid who has authored an AI personality never mistakes one for magic — or for a friend that simply “is that way.” They start asking the sharpest question in AI literacy: who designed this character, and what did they want it to do? That’s the difference between being an audience for AI and being its director.
Why this is the AI lesson that sticks
AI characters are everywhere your child already is — games, apps, homework helpers — and they all arrive the same way: pre-made, personality included, no explanation. Most kids never get a reason to ask where those personalities come from. Lectures about how AI works rarely stick at twelve. Building one does.
One session of deciding how an AI talks — and then meeting the result — makes the point better than any warning: a designed personality is a set of choices, those choices have a goal, and your child is fully capable of making them. The strongest defense against being played by a designed character is knowing, firsthand, how characters get designed.
What ends up in the portfolio
An official character bio page
The sidekick’s complete bio — name, personality, signature catchphrases, and its one carefully chosen flaw — plus a highlight from the first meeting. Proof your child can author AI behavior, not just consume it.
Questions parents ask about Design Your Own AI Sidekick
What does my child actually make in Design Your Own AI Sidekick?
An original AI character they authored themselves (its personality, catchphrases, and one defining flaw), introduced in a short first-meeting scene and shipped to their FoundrKids portfolio as an official character bio page.
Does Design Your Own AI Sidekick require a box?
No. It’s a Studio mission: it lives entirely in the FoundrKids app, guided by Spark, the AI coach. FoundrKids Kit missions need a physical FoundrKids Kit, and kits are coming later; Studio missions need nothing but a screen and a big idea.
What age is Design Your Own AI Sidekick for?
It’s built for the Founder tier, ages 11–15. A typical session runs 15–25 minutes, and the character your child creates stays in their portfolio.
Is it safe for my child to talk to an AI character?
Yes. The whole mission is guided by Spark, FoundrKids’ mission-scoped AI coach, not an open chatbot. Every message your child writes is screened before it ever reaches the AI, replies are filtered before your child sees them, and you can read every conversation anytime.
